Williams Announces New Merit Scholarship Funding
 |
In a bid to attract more of the country’s top medical students to Duke, R. Sanders “Sandy”
Williams, MD’74, HS’77-’80 recently announced a commitment of $514,000 in institutional funds for merit scholarships.
Students entering this fall will be the first to benefit from the new funds, and Williams plans to continue funding the initiative for at least another two years.
“The competition is fierce among our peer institutions for these top students who will be tomorrow’s leaders and scholars in medicine,”
said Williams, who is senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We want to make it easier for them to choose Duke.”
Increasing funding for merit scholarships
is a key element of Williams’ 10-year strategic plan for the School of Medicine, announced in fall 2006. The plan, designed to move the School of Medicine from its long held position among the nation’s top 10 to a new position among the top five, also includes substantial growth in faculty and facilities.
